We care
- Have you had a self-managed or medical abortion?
- Did you return for a follow-up after the procedure?
- Did you not complete the medication abortion?
- Did you have an ultrasound prior (see our Abortion page to know why this is important for you)
- Are you experiencing unusual symptoms following the procedure?
- Concerned you might still be pregnant?
- Did you feel alone self-managing and simply need to talk to someone about it?
Why?
Post-abortive assessment, care, and follow-up after a self-managed abortion or medical abortion are important to ensure complications do not go undetected (i.e. uterine perforation, sepsis, hemorrhage, etc.), which could be detrimental to health (emotional and medical) or future fertility. While routine follow‐up may not always be necessary, it can potentially be used to address post‐abortion birth control, emotional support, or medical concerns, and is still recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for confirmation of successful abortion in some circumstances (WHO 2018).
